So not enough
I sneaked into the Neurology department today coz the Respiratory room was quite boring with all the coughing and fever.
Gee... the Neurology department was really an interesting room because you get all the WEIRD problems there, and it really is a place where TCM can really shine.
For instance, we had this patient returning today for 2nd visit with eye-lid problems. I'm not sure what you call this in English, but this man couldn't control his eyelids for 2 years. It kept shutting up on him and he has to use his hand to open them up in order to see.
If you are strong in TCM theories, you will be able to prescribe the right herbal remedies with no effort. Our teacher here is rather good at this. He prescribed some herbs that could regulate QI that works upwards and some to cleanse the lung meridien. He also added some that harmonizes the exchange of QI between the Yin and the Yang so that he won't have to struggle so much to try to open the eye lids. The rest were to pump up the function of the spleen meridien and to 'water' the kidney meridien.
I know, it's hard to understand... right? But it's a really bright prescription.
Only a person with absolute understanding and trust of the TCM theories can formulate such brilliant combination; much like a good painting with all the right colours.
And of course, the patient told us that he felt a visible improvement after taking the herbs for 7 days.
It really is just applying the laws of nature to treat our health problems. Nothing so magical.
2 weeks supply of herbs. Probably costed him RMB 160.
Contented with what I've learnt today, plus the heaty weather, I felt like trying out KFC in Mountain East coz my Malaysian colleagues told me western fast food chain stores are really delicious here.
Whoala, I took a bus ride and arrived at the omnipresent KFC.
There were so many people and I couldn't really understand what they wrote on the menu. (Imagine all the English menu being translated into Chinese, ok?)
I really didn't know what to order so I choose something that I could pronounce that wouldn't make me sound like an idiot from nowhere. And hence, I ended up ordering something I thought to be grilled chicken.
It better be nice because it's frikin RMB 24.
And... tada... what did they give me???
2 pathetic chicken wings! For RMB 24!
What the xxxx!!!
So not enough, ok?

I think the eye sign is bilateral ptosis, he needs botox injection :p
Did your teacher tell you what's the diagnosis? Sounds interesting to me.
Ah Fan
Yes, I think you are right. It's bilateral ptosis. My teacher said, well, in chinese, is 痿证. Patients come here for TCM treatment, so we have to give them chinese herbs. I think Acupuncture is quite effective as well. The herbs are MAINLY to strengthen the lids and to clear the 'heatiness' which is really the problem. Well, again, in TCM point of view.
好像是重症肌无力,眼睑不能抬起。
Simple cure - get a naked girl infront of him. His eyes will be opened wide. Doctors are to conventional.
You-know-who
Interesting, western medicine and TCM approach are so different. There are many diagnosis for bilateral ptosis in WM. In this case, does it mean that the patient is lack of XI to open his eyes? Wonder does the chinese herbs contain steroid?
If the patient wants western treatment, what sort of medicine will he gets?
'Zhong Zhen ji' wu li = myasthenia gravis?
Fan
Ah Fan, everything is related to Qi. In this patient's case, well, according to my teacher, it's the 'pathological' Qi - in this case the HEAT - that's 'blocking' the normal function of Qi.
No, no steroids in the herbs, it's a misconception amplified by Western media, no in hospitals, at least. I am anti-steroid, and I also copy all the concoction for patients.
If the patient wants WM treatment, then they will be given what they wanted. All our teachers are also WM trained, it's just that they use Chinese terms. Our hospital is also a WM hospital, it's a very different scene from Malaysia or the rest of the world.
Here are some links that I believe will be interested
Very pretty design! Keep up the good work. Thanks.
